These are designs for a co-worker's new upcoming album! His name is Keith Donaldson, and he's pretty snazzy. The theme he wanted was "seven sisters"... I referred to Klimt for some naked lady action, and Dulac for fantastical inspiration. And Voila! I think it's okay... It needs tweeks.. but enjoy!

I haven't worked on any personal work in a while. If you recall, I made this ink drawing a bit ago. So, here it is with a bit of color. I'm pleased with it. I feel like I'm starting to develop some sort of illustration style. It took me a while! My day job at GEF (Green Education Foundation) has really helped.

This piece is specifically about the time our washer machine broke when I was in elementary school. We didn't replace it for some time...so in the time it took to get to the laundry mat, this is what happened. There were piles in our downstairs shower, in my parent's bedroom, in the hallway, on the living room couch, and in our upstairs den. The pile in my parent's bedroom was specifically gigantic. So much so, I felt like I could bury myself in the clothes and no one would find me.

The memories I've put aside for a long time have been popping up a lot lately. Continuing a personal body of work is meant to get them out of my memory and put on paper, so I don't feel like I'm only imagining them.

In High School, my best friend Emily (of 18 or so years now) wrote a poem about a boy named Neville Hopper. It's pretty glorious, and dark I might add. We have decided to seriously pursue its production. SO! Here is the sketch for the first page illustration. A couple Illos for the drink column at Providence Monthly. One is about Elderberry liquer (?) which sounds quite tasty.. and the other is.. well.. Narragansett, which is more nostalgic than anything. Both are hand drawn with ink, and colored digitally. Pick up the magazine on the east side of Providence, it usually has some pretty tasty concoctions!

Ohh do I love the finance articles for East Side Monthly. I can appreciate the articles, and why they're written, but I can't for the life of me, relate to them. Very rich people needing financial advice. Where do I invest my obscene amount of money? What do I spend my millions of inherited money on? This one pertains to women, educating themselves on how to handle their finances. Sigh. It was a double wammy for me. I enjoy doing them anyway, they're always a challenge. Enjoy! If you come across an East Side Monthly, flip through and read the article. They're always very insightful.

Dirty Laundry

Number 3 in a new series of illustrations. They are all Ink on paper. My plan is to paint the last two with acryla/gouache like I did the first of the series. It's turning out to reflect symbols, incidents and memories from my childhood (big surprise! ha). For this particular piece, I recalled our washer breaking, and months work of clothes piling up all around the house. I literally could have been buried in them and no one would have found me.

My creepy children roots! I've had this silly life dream of working for Tim Burton...until that day, I will illustrate the crap out of all the creepy things in my head! I'm moving along on the first piece, and have started a new one! Featuring Cajun, the samoyed I grew up with. Kids assign roles to stuffed animals and pets...Cajun was always sort of looking out for me...This illustrates him taking me away to a safer place- if that makes sense. Enjoy!

I've been illustrating a lot lately. I miss painting, but I also don't want to go right into the style that I was working with months ago. I'm really interested in exploring my painting style and illustration style in one. By my own terms... not worried about what a teacher will say, or if my peers will like it, or think it's stupid. I just jumped in, and this is the beginning. Ink on paper- I'm going to do tests in photoshop, then hit the original with oil or watercolor... not sure yet.

We have Fozzy the Bear riding a snow mobile. A Dirt Devil for a 4 year old who likes cleaning, and many more. This is what it's come to I suppose.

Recent 3Ds atop cakes for Icing on the Cake. These are my favorite to do, because they are the most challenging and remind me that I am not just a cake decorator but still an artist- Even if it's a dumb bunny in a birthday hat. They're all edible, and made of cake and fondant.

I'm still working on paintings- however the time I spend is becoming less frequent. I miss it very much. The older you get, and the more responsibilities we have, the more money we need. If I could leave it all and just paint, that is what I'd do. For now, this will do. And I do like it.

Bryan's mom saved me an article about Sin Desserts (Those of you that don't know, I used to work there, and miss it very much) I'm very proud of them, and excited to have seen them in the Projo. What was even cooler, was seeing this cake! One of the last cakes I worked on with Keri and Jen before I left. This place is where my love for cake art began, and it will always be my favorite. They are genuine, sweet, and very knowledgeable and talented. I'm grateful to have learned from them.

I've realized I really hate the pronunciation "fond- aunt" It's more like "fond-int" to me, but Whatever! (My boss... and Buddy from Cake Boss both use the one that makes my ears bleed) Here are some recent 3d creations at Icing on the Cake! It's going well.

Teapot- cake covered with fondant, gum paste spout and handle and handpainted roses with edible sugar paint, and gold luster dust!
Mr. Tickles- cake covered in fondant, gum paste arms, damn creepy smile. Apparently he's some character that the children love...
Turtle!- Cake covered in fondant- and piped on details. Isn't he cute? I'd feel bad eating him.

I started a new decorating job- in Newton MA at Icing on the Cake. I'm very excited to be there. It's closer to a full time job than both of my other jobs combined! And it's a great working atmosphere, I couldn't be more grateful.
As you can see, the circus cake is for a first birthday. As for the skulls, I decorated it based on a 13 yr old's dream design for her cake.

Sin Does the Boston Flower and Garden Show

So, I started a new job last week, at a new bakery. Being a grown up can kind of suck when you have to choose something more practical over something more fun. Not that this new bakery isn't fun to work at! It's just a lil' different. And their cakes are mighty tasty. It's The Icing on The Cake. But this cake here, was one of my last cakes for Sin Desserts. Jen will have me back for more painted cakes like this when people request them, which makes me feel better about having to leave. I also had to leave Beadworks, but am still teaching occasional classes.

Missing No Vacancy

This is a piece I recently salvaged from a really bad scan. A lot of my darkest paintings translate badly to a scan. This was the final piece in my "No Vacancy" series, I completed it once we were back in the states. It was part of the "Pura Vida" show. It also sort of goes hand in hand with another cardinal inspired piece that's part of the "How to Get to Vireo Street" series. Anywho- It's oil on paper. And it's also part of a private collection along with the other No Vacancy pieces.

Sin. Is so cool. I still get to paint! See? This was a cake that Jen and I worked on for Ronald McDonald house. I think in this situation it was sort of 'Make a Wish' foundation'-like. The little girl we made it for is very sick. It was her birthday and she loves Twilight. So, it's a cake shaped exactly like the book! I am yet to see that movie. But I heard she loved it! Whoever she is, I hope she gets better. Say a little prayer for her.

So.. I was babysitting the other night. And! We made awesome things out of sculpey. Max made an awesome hermit crab, and Maya made a pretty sweet snail. Here are a few of the ones I did:

A series that I did a few months ago. It was one of my last hoorahs at RISD. Since I've been working to keep up rent, it's tougher than I thought it would be to keep up painting. I've been doing a lot of drawing like this in my sketchbook, and that's probably why I'm most comfortable with drawing lately. I am making a point however, to try and do some painting even if I'm exhausted. \
Anywho... II believe these are successful in getting my point across, because the images are fleeting, and are in tune with my process of remembering these things.

It's taken me far too long to get this one going. It's harder to approach paintings now after a day of work when all you want to do is eat dinner and sit down for a long while. I might do more drawings with ink because of this. I want to make art fun again. RISD did something that made it un-fun. There's an inspirational rut I'm in, and I need to get out of it! I got a little farther and happier about this painting after a day that I drove by my old house and neighborhood. It all looked the same. Same mailbox, pool, windows... the fireman sticker was still in my bedroom window. But it's all different people. It's no longer my home, it's theirs'. I think that helped me figure out what I wanted with this piece.

The first few months out of college is terrifying. People had warned me, but I didn't believe them. I have been on my own since Junior year of College,so I thought it would be a cinch, but it's still very different. School offers a security blanket, and now I don't have that. I'm embarking on my third job and I'm hoping that something will give. Wish me luck!

I suppose if I were to "illustrate" It would look like this (above). This is from this last year at RISD

It's very hard for me to illustrate. I'm not sure that people completely understand why since I did major in Illustration (It's a long story). I've always felt more like a painter, because of my personal pursuits and ideas. Many of my illustrator friends fit in well and are getting jobs successfully, because they are GOOD (GREAT in fact) at what they do. If I were to illustrate, I would need some kind of edgy outlet. Like Tim Burton-esque. Or angsty stuff.

I ran into a friend today who mentioned my personal paintings . He observed that maybe we replay events from out past, over and over again to get past the reoccurring guilt.
I wouldn't say that I make these paintings because of guilt. Most likely, it's part of it because there's a guilt that comes with things unsaid, and undone obviously. I am certain I would feel even more guilty if I stopped pursuing these paintings all together because they're too gloomy. I think it's okay to relish in melancholy from time to time.
What it comes down to is: I need to make these paintings. Not just because I'm angry, sad or hurt. But because there's something to learn from them. With every memory comes an image in my head that I need to make. And with every one there's hope of healing.

As we speak I am uploading images to the Applied Arts Magazine for publication in September!
Also. At Sin,we just finished with the Zoobilee Event at Roger Williams Park zoo. The 4 tiered cake I designed and constructed (dummycake with fondant and paint) was luckily a big hit! (photos to come). I find that I have more luck painting and sculpting than I do piping on cakes. But I still hope to learn the art of piping, and do it well.

In addition to working at Sin, I am also working at Beadworks in the Jewelry District of Providence. It's been really great, and I'm learning so much.
I'm happy and content being able to still make things during the day at my jobs, and come home to paint at night. I hope it lasts for a while, until I figure out what the next stage is. Stay tuned.

I just found out I won the Applied Arts competition for the upcoming issue in September! So I'll keep you posted on that. They picked a few from my "How to get to Vireo Street" series. There will also be a show in Toronto in November.
